The objectives of the research at the Department of Pathology is personalised medicine through diagnostics on tissue and cell samples.
The research aims are to learn more about the disease mechanisms in cancer diseases and non-malignant disorders and to translate this knowledge into the improvement of the diagnostic procedure.
The research embraces all diagnostic areas and organ systems. Most of the research focuses on cancer diseases, attempting to understand more about the disease mechanisms and turning this knowledge into better and more individual diagnoses.
In addition, a research focus area is digitisation of the diagnostic procedure and the laboratory operations, including improvement of the patient safety.
The research uses methods and tools normally used during the diagnostic procedures, including tissue and cell staining procedures, microscopy, quantitative microscopy, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, flow-in situ-hybridization (FISH), mRNA analysis (PCR and blotting techniques) and DNA mutation analysis (next generation sequencing). Other methods and tools requisite for specific research projects are included whenever needed.
The research is performed in close collaboration with other departments at the hospital and at other hospitals in the region, with research departments at University of Copenhagen and at the Danish Technical University (DTU), with private biotech companies in the Copenhagen area and with international research teams.
