The major research activities at our department, have for last few years been within spinal surgery, joint replacements surgery and tumour surgery where 9-10 Ph.D. students are now working on different research projects.
Spinal surgery: radiographic analysis of paediatric and adult spinal deformities, epidemiologic aspects of spinal surgery on a national level, pre-operative classification of patients with spinal metastasis, classification of patients with spinal fractures, improving safety in spine surgery, and genetic aspects of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
Joint replacement Surgery: evaluation of new implants within knee and hip joint replacement.
Tumour surgery: Bone metastases, benign bone tumours, bone and soft tissue sarcomas, wound closure techniques.
The backbone of the clinical spine research is a prospective database established in 2005 with all relevant information of operated patients.
DEXA-scanning is available for measurements of bone density changes in the proximity of orthopaedic implants. Radiostereometric analysis for evaluation of implant migration is an available technique. These research tools have been combined with extensive interdisciplinary collaborations, including basic research, both nationally and internationally.
