Aims and objectives
The research aims at improving diagnosis and management of diseases caused by microorganisms.
Objectives include
1. improved understanding of disease mechanisms,
2. counteracting resistance to antimicrobial drugs,
3. assessment of novel diagnostic techniques,
4. Improved infection control.
Focus areas
Bacterial biofilm including infections in cystic fibrosis and chronic wounds - associated with Costerton biofilm center
Malaria - associated with Centre for Medical parasitology (Global excellence 2015)
Antibiotic resistance
Molecular diagnosis and typing
Hospital infection control
Intestinal pathogens
Mycotic infections
Disciplines, methods and tools
Clinical and epidemiological studies, animal and in vitro models of e.g. antibiotic effects, biofilm infection and malaria
Classical microbiological techniques, in vitro antibiotic sensitivity testing, molecular biological methods including detection (e.g. PCR) and genotyping (e.g. whole genome sequencing, ribotyping, MLST)
Immunological techniques including flow cytometry and antibody detection
Advanced imaging techniques including confocal and electron microscopy, in vivo imaging (partly done as collaborative projects)
Environmental sampling techniques
