Aims and objectives
We aim to adapt the treatment of breast cancer to highest international level. We aim to develop new treatment modalities such as intra operative radiadiation therapy and gene based selection of women with high and low risk of breast cancer and recurrence of breast cancer.
Focus areas
Our focus areas:
Intraoperative radiation
TARGIT is a treatment of small low risk breast cancer patients with a single radiation dose during operation. The treatment is proven non-inferior to traditional external radiation treatment. We participate in studies that should confirm the efficacy of a single dose of intraoperative radiotherapy in a well selected group of patients with a small breast cancer and absence of risk factors.
Gene profiling
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have revealed increased breast cancer risk associated with multiple genetic variants. We contribute among others to case-control studies in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC). Using large cohortes of genotyped patients with imputed single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) we contribute to find evidence for identification of subgroups of patients diagnosed with breast cancer with alterations in there genome to open new ways for personalised treatments.
